During the Peloponnesian War, the Athenians sent a disastrous expedition to Sicily in an attempt to capture Syracuse. Shortly before their final defeat, one of the generals had advocated a withdrawal, but this was delayed by a lunar eclipse, which was interpreted as an unfavorable omen. Suppose that Demosthenes is able to convince Nicias to retreat a bit sooner, or the eclipse is interpreted differently--how does the course of the war change if the Athenians are able to salvage a good portion of their army?
