WI: Asian South Africa

Apparently, the Dutch wanted to recruit Chinese coolies for labor in South Africa, but nobody wanted to go that far. What if the Dutch were able to convince them to go to South Africa, and South Africa got an Asian majority?

What would happen?

How many Chinese would be needed for a majority?

A Chinese majority would be very interesting though.
How much of their original culture would be retained?
How would their relationship be with the native population?

Either way, the Dutch are still going to be the rich of this state unless the Chinese majoirty decide to do something about it.

I'm not sure how this would look, but it fascinates the hell out of me.

And Where Dutch bring them might matter. SA could have white/coloured majority province (in Cape), black majority province, and Chinese majorities provinces.

SA Singapore, with majority Asian in Africa continent would be interesting.

It sounds really interesting to me, too. It'd probably be like a laborer class, except with much less rights. I think that some parts of SA might be white, black, or Asian. And if the British get SA like in OTL, I wonder what happens with the introduction of Indian laborers :)

as interesting as the idea is, i doubt you'd be able to get an Asian-majority South Africa; i'd say if anything they'd form a plurality

Agreed, a plurality seems the only possibility. Also, Indians were brought in significant numbers as laborers by the British. This may be another possibility.

Apartheid would likely play out the same way, just with Afrikaaner anxieties split over the brown/yellow as well as the black.*

*Indicating how they would see it.
