WI: Anti-war Republicans during Vietnam

How could you get a timeline where the Republicans are more strongly unified and anti-war during Vietnam? Also maybe an anti-war Republican version of McCarthy in 68, possibly McCloskey?

George Romney might be your man - he looked presidential, was a somewhat successful governor (with the exception of the Detroit riot of 1967, which is a huge exception), and might've been able to sell a message of business-first, of settling the Vietnam mess and getting the economy back into shape.

Shame about the 'brainwashing' line, though. And about George Romney's general ineffectiveness on the campaign trail.
