WI Anthemius continued attack on the vandals

So as we know in 468 under a false flag of truce genseric used his fireships to destroy the roman fleet.

But what if Anthemius the general sent to combat the vandals refused Genseric's offer of a truce and continued the push into Africa.

Would such a move lead to the vandals defeated.

If so and Africa gets retaken by the large army sent from the east do you think Anthemius could use these men of his from the campaign to maintain his position as Emperor of the west and defeat Ricimer.

On that note if the Vandals are beatean how much longer does Rome last.

If the Vandals are defeated and North Africa is returned, the western Roman Empire just got a new lease on life. North Africa is vital for grain and equally importantly, revenue. I take Peter Heather's view that 468 was really the last chance to revive the empire by taking North Africa. I also share his view that with North Africa, the WRE can continue on indefinitely.

awesome so in that case how do the germanic tribes in gaul, hispania, and germania fare. What type of Europe do you think will develop and will the angles and saxons still successfully invade the isles?

Won't the conquering Islamic armies still take the area in a few generations anyway? or would this POD somehow change that?

Very much most likely would. Assuming we get an Islam, it isn't inevitable that the ERE and the Sassanid's will both wreck themselves enough to allow the calipahte to sweep in and take Egypt, to say nothing of the Maghreb.

Perhaps the West being more stable means the East doesn't waste manpower in that direction, leaving them better off in terms of money and manpower.

so, the basic idea is that 'with NA under control, the WRE does better and doesn't collapse, the ERE doesn't exhaust itself in the west, and does better against the Sassanids, and thus, Islam, if/when it arises, doesn't get out of Arabia in general'? That's a pretty neat POD. But it's hard to imagine that both Romes just go on and on indefinitely, as they both had some pretty severe issues beside NA. So, what's next?

That really depends on what happens on the continent. You still have a few more rounds of migrations which can have all sorts of effects but Rome can withstand all of them if it plays the right cards. But really, what I think you have is that the Mediterranean becomes the real bastion of Roman culture, to the point where its influence and prestige can be compared with that of Chinese culture to the North China plain.

Economically, this probably aslo hurts northern Europe in the long term.
