In 26 June 363 Emperor Julian was killed in skirmishes with Persians near Ctesiphon. The army leaderless offered the purple to Praefectus Praetorio Orientis Saturninus Secundus Sallustius who was a pagan... However Sallustius declined the election stating that he was too old and sick to bear such a burden...
Following his decline the troops elected the Comes Domesticorum Jovian who accepted the election and became the new Emperor.
WI Sallustius had accepted the election? How is another pagan Emperor affects History? What is the Church's reaction? Any thoughts?
