WI: Ann Richards ran for President in 1992?

Just what the Question says. What if then-Texas Governor Ann Richards sought the Democratic nomination for President of the United States in 1992? How well would she have done? Could she have gotten past the primary? Could she have beaten Bush in the General Election?

She'd be viewed as a second tier candidate and her candidacy won't go very far, though it may get her name on the VP "short list" of the eventual nominee. A good OTL parallel is the 2000 presidential campaign of Elizabeth Dole.

Richards could not have tried for president unless she beat W in 1994 as governor. I am increasingly convinced this was a hinge moment in history. Get Richards over W in 1994 and America is safe from all the hell that has happened to us.

If Richards cant win in 94, she can go no further.

Why not? No, I think she'd be able to make a decent crack at it. Elizabeth Dole went nowhere for many reasons, none of which I think apply to Ann Richards, or the 1992 race. Many Democrats would have her 'Silver Spoon' quip of 1988 in the back of their minds, and I think she'd potentially be able to be competitive.

We're talking about '92. Whether or not Richards could have defeated GWB in '94 is a completely different subject.

I don't think Richards could have got very far in 92.

Sorry to sidetrack things by saying Richards losing to W was a turning point in American history.

I think I'll go off and write a full OTL where Richards wins in 94.

US is not ready for a female President in 1992 but as said she'd get on the veep shortlist. This creates butterflies for the 1994 campaign against Bush, which could help her if that election came down to turnout.

With only a two-year experience but having unionwide name recognition due to her speech at the 1988 Convention, she could be a long shot in 1992, but the "first female candidate" slot is taken in these times by Ferraro and Pat Schroeder, who fared quite terribly IOTL. Would have more chances in 1996, especially after 16 years of Republican control.

Maybe George H. W. Bush Will Lose Texas to Ann Richards in Elections
I warn you about necro'ing a thread TWO DAYS ago and now you do this with a zero addition post.

Leave the dead lie.

Take some time, a week maybe, to reflect on the error of your ways.

Kicked for seven.
