WI. Anglo-French Panama Canal?

As the French had, lets say, had bitten off more than they could chew and had no money left what could have happen if the UK had stepped in as a partner? Either the UK government or a private group, like shipping and rail companies. The US would be put out, but by then they couldn't have done anything about it apart from buying them out at much more than the OTL $40million. Not to mention the Monroe Doctrine has taken a massive knock.

Pros, con's and what have yous?

The British weren't very interested in a Panama Canal, for it did not serve their strategic interest. The Suez was considered vital because it protected the route to India, (basically the entire reason the non-white Empire existed). but Panama was really only of great importance to the Americans. The French did it because it was a prestige project that de Lesseps convinced them would be fairly easy and profitable.

Also, no amount of money would have the French plan succeed in Panama.

You need a POD that gives the British incentive to throw away money on a fruitless endeavor, OR you need the French to have a better plan in the first place, something workable. As-is, there's just too little motive and too high a cost for the British to have any interest.
