WI Andrew Johnson is assassinated

It is well known that Abraham Lincoln was assassinated on 14th April 1865. What is perhaps less known is that the conspirators had planned to kill Vice President Andrew Johnson and Secretary of State William Seward as well. As it was the attempt on Seward failed with the attacker being chased away after having stabbed Seward multiple times, while the assassin assigned to Andrew Johnson - George Atzerodt - never carried out the plan - although he had asked about Johnson's whereabouts drawing suspicion and leading to his arrest.

So what if George Atzerodt had gone ahead with the plan and successfully killed Johnson?
The immediate consequences would be governed by the Presidential Succession Act of 1792, which is quite different from the current Succession. For one it places the president pro tempore of the senate after the vice president (the speaker of the house if fourth), secondly it demands that a special election is held the December after the vacancy occurred [1]. At time Lafayette Foster was president pro tempore of the Senate and would have become acting president upon Lincoln and Johnson's death. Although Foster was a Republican he had strained relations with the radical wing of the party, and supported the readmission of the confederate states as quickly as possible. He had also voted against a bill which would have allowed for universal suffrage of blacks in DC (although this may have been due to his opposition to universal suffrage in general). However, unlike Johnson who could claim the office of president based on the precedent John Tyler set, Foster would remain only acting president as the law clearly mandated a special election to take place in 8 months. Therefore it seems likely that he would e.g. not issue the Johnson's pardons of 1865, and would not obstruct the agenda of the radical republicans nearly as much as Johnson did. Furthermore Foster would likely only be a caretaker for 8 months as it seems unlikely that the Republicans would nominate him for the special election [2].

Who do you think the Republicans would choose as their candidate for the election of 1865? And how he reconstruction be affected without Johnson's presidency?

[1] Or the December next year if the there were less than two months to go until this December. However, since the assassination took place in April the election would be on December 1865.
[2] IOTL the Republicans in Connecticut legislature would not reelect him in 1866 because he was seen as to close to Johnson.

Would thexpect party pick either Secretary of State William H. Seward or Former Vice President Hannible Hamlin.

General Grant would be needed to reassure military stability.

Is senator Henry Wilson too radical for the whole republican party.

initiallv under the then law a fairly obscure pres pro tem of the senate is acting president but there would be a new election for a full term in the fall of 1865
