WI: Andrew Johnson assassinated along with Lincoln?

I'll just note that Salmon P. Chase, who was surely one of the most ardent advocates of the rights of the freedmen, sought the Democratic nomination for president in 1868. Horace Greeley, who was deeply hated by Democrats and another advocate of freedmen's rights, was the actual Democratic nominee. The party system was pretty confused at this point - it's not totally crazy for Grant to run as a Democrat.

Well, I don't believe Grant had presidential aspirations had that point anyway; but I can't say for sure.

OTL he probably didn't. As the next election was almost four years away, he'd had no reason to give the matter much thought.

But TTL there is likely to be one this year (unless Congress amends the 1792 Act) and Grant towers head and shoulders above all other possibles. And has he any reason to decline in favour of an interim POTUS whom most Americans had probably barely heard of until April, or a Sec of State who has already been passed over twice?
