WI and ACH: Surviving Scottish Empire

Basically, how can the Darien Scheme, or any other earlier attempts at Scottish colonization such as Nova Scoita, succed?

Also what effect would this have on Europe and the new world? With an Empire, would Socland eventually still seek union with England, or remain independent, possibly ceasing its personal union with England at some point?

OK lets assume that Darien worked (someone pointed out on another tread that it may be possible to create a Darien Canal between the Pacific and Atlantic so say that this was built).

Scotland now has income coming in from its colonies, but it needs trade to survive. One of the main drives for Union was access to the English trade outposts, we would need to see Scotland producing trade goods. I am not sure that Whiskey (however nice) and oat cakes are going to be high on people's must buy list.

This means competing with England and I think we all know where that leads!

The vote for Union was dam close (even with the Yes vote biases in place) and my feeling is that Scotland goes its own way when it can (although not to the extent of inviting a Catholic to be king).

Big affect on the English empire, which would have been a lot less successful without the Scots there.
