WI : American Colony of Papua

Do we have any dates on this? Because off the top of my head the easiest thing to do is for it to, somehow, get captured by the Americans in a war with Germany given that the US wasn't interested in Papua and there had been German missionaries and speculative trade explorers since the late 1870s.

Yeah, unless it's a situation where America is given it as a Mandate Territory after the war, I really don't see how or why they'd get it given that the only parts of the Asia-Pacific the U.S. was actually interested in were Guano Islands, Hawai'i and the Mariana Islands, I mean we did'nt even actually intend to take the Philippines, it was basically luck that we did.

This is ASB. Papua is in Australia's back yard so to speak. Why the dickens would the LoN give it as a mandate to the US bearing in mind that US was not even part of the LoN?

Papua is the SE "third" (or fourth, I suppose) of the island; the NE third/fourth was (historically) "NE New Guinea."

Germany claimed NE New Guinea in 1884; the territory also included the islands (historically) known as New Britain and New Ireland, and the northern Solomons; they purchased the Spanish claims in Micronesia (other than Guam) in 1899.

An potential POD would be the Samoan crisis in 1889; if that had turned into a shooting war, than presumably the US might have taken possesion of the German territories in the Southwest Pacific.

Likewise, if Diederichs had intervened in the Phillippines in 1898, there's another possibility; finally, the Venezuelan Crisis of 1902-03, had it evolved into an actual conflict between the US and Germany, offers a third possibility.

Best,
