Following the Declaration of Independence, the United States did not initially use the Stars and Stripes design we know today, and instead used a design known as the Grand Union Flag:

What if, for whatever reason, the Continental Congress decided to retain this flag? What would be the political and cultural effects? Would the Grand Union Flag continue to be used until the present day, or would it be abandoned for something else some way down the line?

It might prompt British dominions such as Australia to avoid using the Union Jack in their own flags.
