WI: America and Britain Give Control of the Atomic Bomb to the UN

What if after the atomic bombings of Japan and end of World War II in 1945, the United States and British Empire took the suggestion of their scientists and turned over the atomic bomb and such technology over to control by the United Nations and neutralized their arsenals?

Wow. What kind of PoD is going to bring THAT about?

Given that the US didn't even share nuclear weapons results with the Brits, who had done the preliminary work for the Abomb, were the US's biggest allies, and despite an agreement to share the results.

Why would the US suddenly hand over all the weapons to a body they didn't control?

Seems remarkably improbable to me.

So, if you've got a whomping big PoD that causes that change, there's going to be LOTS of other changes, too. And what those changes are, and how the situation evolves will be heavily dependent on said PoD.

So, the question as asked is unanswerable, because there isn't enough info.

We could always say its ASB and speculate from there.
IMHO I think that nuclear proliferation would be much worse than it is today, and there would probably be a dirty bomb going off in some city or other before the turn of the century.

"The US agreed to turn over all of its weapons on the condition that all other countries pledge not to produce them and agree to an adequate system of inspection. The Soviets rejected this plan on the grounds that the United Nations was dominated by the United States and its allies in Western Europe, and could therefore not be trusted to exercise authority over atomic weaponry"

How can the Soviets accept it, perhaps the U.N. authority that's going to be in control of nuclear weapons has to have equal Soviet participation?

In an ideal world, this would probably be the best thing to do with nuclear weapons, by having all nations give up pursuit of such weapons and agree to inspections. It would probably also lead to cheap nuclear power available worldwide. However, we don't live in an ideal world where everyone would be happy with that (especially the USSR), and such a plan would require that the UN would destroy militarily any nation which did pursue nuclear arms. I doubt the UN would be made strong enough to actually achieve that, particularly in the post-WW2 environment. It's more of a world-government wet dream.
