WI: Allied Italy in WWII?

If Mussolini was knocked off a few months before the Italio-Abyssinian war, and his successor was Balbo or something, could it be possible for Italy to enter WWII on the Allied side? What would be the consequences? Would Italy be any more successful? What would they get post war?

It might be possible, but much more likely for Italy to stay neutral until it looks like the Allies would win, otherwise Italy is going to be invaded and likely crushed after France.

Plus: Italy as an immediate staging post for the Allies into the soft underbelly of southern Europe.
Negative: Italian military and organizational incompetence.

Plus 1938: Better deterrance against Germany --- does Austria get conquered in 1938 if Italy is not aligned with Germany?

Plus 1940: Supply lines are secured in the Med
Plus 1940: A few more French divisions in the North plus potential Italian reinforcements for central France as where else would the Italians fight the Germans besides the Brenner Pass where a large army is not needed.

If Italy aligns with UK/France in 1937, IMO, WWII as we recognize it is averted.

What if ethopia makes a deal to keep Il Duce quiet. Give half of the kingdom to Italy in exchange for alliance against the reich

What? Why would Ethiopia give up half its land for an alliance with a country they hate and against a country they are no where near.

With world's Great Powers agaisn't them they would have a choice to opt for peace treaty that forgoes half of their territory, or opt for war which they would lose. In OTL they counted on League of Nations intervening on their behalf. Here they would have to act without such illusions.

Why doesn't Italy just invade then? They have no incentive to just demand land instead of conquer, they are fascists after all, even if it's just Balbo. I imagine they will try to reach a deal where they are allowed to conquer some countries with Allies to join their side. Including Ethiopia.
