WI: Aliens are proved to be real

Let say that a massive sightings of UFO´s during recent history (Like the Belgian UFO wave in 1989) is confirmed by local government officials and scientific experts as legimit - Intelligent Extraterrestrial life clearly exists. What would happen then? At a political, cultural, societal level, etc.

And an interesting thought: If there were a government conspiracy to cover it up, what would then happen to the conspirators? Lynchmobs, trials, talkshows? :p

Of course, aliens ARE real. My kids quite like the idea that their dad's an alien. Of course, about half the kids at their school can say the same.:)

(My wife briefly ran a Girl Scout troop out of our kids' school, and not a single girl in the troop had both parents born in the US.)

The notion that aliens are visiting the earth is ASB. The reception of a coherent signal via an SETI program is not, especially since governments have allocated resources to do so.

What would be the reaction? Most enlightened people would be curious and understand that two-way communication over light years of space might take generations. Members of certain religious groups would deny the reports, claiming the data was part of some conspiracy to undermine their faith. On the other hand, the Mormons would have a field day.

Proof that Aliens exist!

Of course Aliens are real!
This is freely admitted by the United States Government.
department of Homeland Security form i-526 is "A petition from an Alien Entrepreneur". As my name is on one of these, I am presumably an alien--so there you have it. Proof!
The US Immigration service, Internal revenue and Homespun Security have dozens and dozens of forms. There is, for instance a form for "Aliens with Extraordinary Abilites" (Visa O-1) Telepathy or Telekinesis, perhaps?

  • A form for an Alien change of address (Tau Ceti 3 to Duluth, Montana one supposes).

  • A form for Aliens under going sponsored education in the United States, although I cannot fathom what you primitives, who STILL haven't mastered interstellar warp drive think that you could teach us.

  • The US Social Security department will also provide cash benefits to "Qualified Aliens". Which is useful as we no longer have money.

  • The US State Department document "Pursuant to Public Law 89–497, approved July 8,1966 (80 Stat. 271; 1 U.S.C. 113) needs to be updated as it only deals with "Alien Amateur Radio Operators" and doesn't mention Pan-galactic Hyperddialup
  • A form for a visit by an Alien Physician (that guy in Enterprise with the knobbly bits on his head?)
I also notice that the US passed a law in the 1970s that outlawed Alien child labour--which explains what happened to Jimmy Osman.

American immigration officers are very clever. They have dozens of questions on the forms asked if one has ever been a terrorist, a member of a revolutionary group, engaged in genocide, murder etc, etc. Questions that when aswered corectly will surely keep America safe.

I'm always vaguely amused by this - the "Alone in the Universe" meme has really take hold fast. Back in the 20s, the universe was swarming with life - not just in science fiction but in the popular imagination and even in the scientific world. Heck, as late as the Viking probes we were expecting life on Mars - and nobody would have been particularly disturbed to have found it. Now there's all this "philosophical implications of extraterrestrial life" stuff floating around. It's kinda funny when you think about it - a case where lots of thinking and fictional exploration of it have made people less prepared for it.
