WI: Ali Pasha remains ruler of Yanina

Ali Pasha was the effective ruler of the Pashalik of Yanina as well as territory as far as Greek Macedonia and almost all of Albania, and though he pretended to be a vassal to the Ottoman rulers, he was effectively independent. He even allied with the Souliotes in the Greek War of Independence. However, Mahmud II conducted campaigns against him, and successfully defeated him.

Now, Ali Pasha was quite an interesting figure. He was a harsh ruler, yet his court spoke Greek even though he was a Muslim Albanian. According to Lord Byron, his court in Yanina was "superior in wealth, refinement and learning" to any other Greek town. So, what if he remained the de facto ruler of Yanina?

The dude used Greek as a court language but he saw himself as Albanian, his form of Islam was characteristically Albanian ("he takes from everyone and gives only to the Bektashi"), and his government was primarily Albanian. His promotion of Greek language is kind of a red herring because many self-identifying Albanians and Turks spoke Greek during Ali Pasha's time.

He wouldn't last in the era of Greek nationalism, but maybe he could kickstart Albanian nationalism and found a longer-lasting Albanian royal dynasty.
