WI: Alexios & David Komnenos retake Constantinople before the penultimate sack?

While I personally see the absolute best outcome for Alexios & David Komnenos to become emperor(/s) is for Andronikos I to die before Isaac Angelos is put up as a candidate (a possibility I have explored in one of my previous TLs, one I plan on rebooting at some point in the future), I think there are chances for them to do so afterwards, but before the final Sack of Constantinople.

1. The first of these is a theory that they were conspirators in a plot to eplace Alexios III Angelos with John Komnenos 'the Fat', son of Alexios Axouch, and whose daughter was married to Alexios Komnenos.

2. The second chance I see is when they first take over Trebizond during the reigns of Alexios IV Angelos and Alexios V Doukas Murtzophlos. Say Alexios V holds out longer or drives off the crusaders completely.

Just out of curiosity, which of the two seems more likely?

hmm id take the first option. Option 2 is ealy difficult given the venetians not only had trebuchets but had also breached the sea walls of constantinople. Now if you can pevent the sea walls from falling and the crack that openend up in the land walls from occuring then you could potentially repel the crusaders. After all it took the tuks numerous attempts to take the city when the city was in an even worse position than the situation in 1204.

However David and Alexios would not be able to take the city because they would lack a navy and also if Alexius V Doukas does beat the crusaders his popularity will be at an all time high. Not to mention it was the nobility which elected him and so he has thei backing.

Finnally the various turkish emirates proved to be more than a difficult hurdle fo Trebizond to be honest and so unless that front is stabilized I doubt David or Alexius coulld take constantinople.

Okay, so a successful revolt of John Komnenos/Axouch 'the Fat'. From what I've read, it seems the revolt failed because the conspirators didn't win the Varangian Guard over to their side. Would getting the Varangians to support them be a viable POD?

Yeah could work. Especially if the varangoi are convnced that the angelii are usurpers. Otherwize it cant hapen because the varangoi from inceptiom were designed to be extremly loyal to the emperor.

PERHAPS bribe some gaurds and Invade the city by pulling an alexius I who bribed the gaurds to open the gates and thereby invaded the city and overthrsw botaniates
