WI- Alexander the Great What Ifs?

I have a few what ifs for Alexander the Great...

1. What if Alexander the Great did not die, how far could he have gone.

2. What If Alexander the Great instead of moving into Asia concentrated on the rest of Europe, and Africa.

3. What is Alexander the Great was killed in his childhood, how would it have affected history up to this point.

1) Well, at the time of his death, his troops had already refused to go farther in Asia, so that leaves Europe as the only remaining outlet for expansion. Maybe he could conquer Dacia or Italy...I guess that pretty much removes Rome. One problem is that to get anywhere far in Europe, he'll need a navy to control the Mediterranean. He could get one from Greece, I suppose, but it's still an obstacle.

2) He conquers the area of the Roman Empire. I don't know of anyone at the time who could stop him in Europe. He'll need a navy much more if he goes into Europe, though. That would be the only real obstacle. After all, if he can conquer the most powerful empire in the world at the time, what can't he do?

3) No Hellenistic civilization. The Achaemenid Empire probably lasts for a while. One question will be whether Rome rises as a major power or if it is butterflied away. I'm not sure what else would have been changed.

I suppose the main thing being, his not only living but also long enough to raise an heir, or several heirs to continue the dynasty, but then I think that was the main problem in itself anyway his empire didn't outlast him.

Its not so much that his ermpire didn't out last him, its more that it fragmented as his generals began to fight amongst themselves. Remeber, he did have a son, Alexander III, so even if he dies as per OTL, all he has to do is declare one of the Diadochoi, Ptolemy for example, to be regent until his son can claim the throne. That should give Ptolemy 15 to 20 years to consolidate and stabilize the new Macedonian Empire.

4]Alexander deciding to go on ahead into India and conquer a large swathe of the subcontinent instead of allowing said empire (Nanda I believe?) to fall to Chandragupta

5]Philip surviving his assassination and continuing to head the Macedonian campaign against Persia.

Walk thousands of kilometers over the hellishly-hot-and-dry Taklamakan desert? It is almost as reliable as the claim that Crassus’ soldiers doing the same thing, being captured by Han generals, and setting up a Roman city near Chang'an.

Exactly, back door! :p
