WI: Alexander the Great died immediately after the Battle of Gaugamela?

What if Alexander the Great died a couple days after winning the Battle of Gaugamela?

The way he dies does not matter. Technically anyone can have a heart attack at any given moment, so if there is no other way of death, then that is how it happens.

Darius negotiates a peace with Parmenion (who would undoubtebly succeed him). Probably the same peace he offered Alexander before Guagamela. Parmenion would have accepted it without hesitation.

Parmenion isn't part of the royal family. He's not even the regent - although he might be senior most of those in the field.

Hellllooooo Macedonian civil war, as those who are Argeads fight over the throne the way they've done after nearly ever previous royal death.

So why would Darius offer peace like that to a state tearing itself apart?

After Guagamela? No way Parmenion would take over. He was heavily on the outs with Alexander at at that point. No, Hephaestion would have succeeded Alexander. He was practically Alexander's heir presumative his entire lie. Hell he would have been regent, no question, if he had survived Alexander OTL. I'm not sure if Hephaestion would continue Alexander's campaign. My gut says yes but if he negotiates, and thats a big if, I feel that he would definitely demand Babylon be given to the Macedonians since that was Alexander's next target.

What Alexander wants is irrelevant as soon as his corpse becomes cold. It's undoubtedly going to be used by various men to get what they want, but there's not much to make those who don't care for it support it.

Philip still gets the throne and is still a puppet for whoever has the political upper hand. Might be Antipater, might be Hephaestion, might be Parmenion.
