WI: Alexander sacks Athens?

After the destruction of Thebes Alexander demanded 10 anti-Macedonian politicians in Athens be surrendered to him in return for Athens being spared. Athens managed to convince him to allow them to deal with it themselves, and one man was ostracized. By that time Alexanders eye had turned to bigger things, namely the Persians, so nothing more came of it. However, what if Alexander decided that he would not let Athens off easy for their part in Thebes's rebellion? Lets say he smashes Athens like he did Thebes. Could the city recover? How would this change the history of the region?
