WI: Alexander dies earlier?

hey, all. my curiosity was just piqued and i thought i'd ask for some opinions as to when would be some of the more realistic times that Alexander the Great could die prior to his OTL death, as well as what some of the effects on his empire would be. we (probably) all know that the Macedonian Empire pretty much immediately collapsed after he died, but would him dying earlier make it break even harder, for instance, or could it actually have some slim chance?

anything and everything is welcome for this discussion

I would say that within a reasonable amount of time, an earlier Alexander death would be less disasterous, at least for the whole of Asia. Macedon might be in for some turmoil depending on how early he dies, especially once the war with Persia began.

To focus on Alexander dying during the war with Darius, if he dies in battle I'll assume that a large part of his army fell with him. I don't think Alexander could be a casualty in an ultimately victorious battle. But following his death Persia might just try to break Macedon in the interregnum and might even push into Greece again.

Or Alexander could fall off the unbroken horse when he's a child and Phillip just has to make do with another heir.

Hephaistion marries Alexander's widows and female relatives, rallying the army and making himself the founder of a new dynasty to reign over the new Perso-Macedonian empire.
