WI: Albert Ottinger elected Governor of New York in 1928?

The 1928 New York State Election heralded the return of FDR to politics after he had contracted polio. Incumbent Democratic Governor Al Smith, who would run for President on the Democratic ticket in 1928, requested that Franklin D. Roosevelt run in his place on the Democratic ticket. Now in OTL FDR won by about 26,000 votes over his Republican opponent Albert Ottinger a rather narrow margin. What if FDR had lost the election to Albert Ottinger?

Now my first thought is that whoever the Democratic gubernatorial nominee is in the 1930 New York State Election would win by a large margin over Ottinger. Perhaps Al Smith would once again run for Governor in the wake of his Presidential loss. However this brings us to perhaps the biggest thing, if FDR wasn't the governor of NY is it likely that he would pursue the Democratic nomination in 1932? If so without FDR who is likely to win at the 1932 DNC? What would their Presidency look like?

Yeah that was one of my thoughts as well. Though I guess the counterpoint would be that FDR was reluctant to run in 1928 unsure if he would win, preferring to continue therapy for his polio. A close loss in 1928 could go one of two ways, either FDR is convinced, by a combination of the close margin of 1928 and the onset of the Great Depression, to run again for Governor or he is disheartened by the loss. Considering this I think there's a good chance that he runs again in 1930, though then the question becomes whether or not Smith attempts to reclaim the Governorship. That still leaves the question of the 1932 DNC however, with Roosevelt only obtaining the governorship two years earlier he may be less willing to run in 1932.

I wonder how many Democrats would be trying for the nomination for Governor in 1930. I would think Smith would have had the inside edge, so this scenario has FDR not even in elected office by 1932, so definetly a different Dem nominee for pres in 32.
