WI: Al Smith wins in 1928

What if the Democratic ticket of Al Smith/Joseph T. Robsinson won in 1928 over who I consider the worst president of all time. Herbet Hoover. does the great depression happen? does FDR ever get elected in the Future. how will Smith's politcial ideas shape the nation? or alot go the same at OTL?

First off I can see no way for him to be elected, second he's more or less just like Hoover, Smith was against the New Deal in OTL so I can't see him doing much different from Hoover if he (some how) won in 1928, there is a great depression and in TTL Hoovertowns are Smithvilles, FDR might try to dark horse Smith but I can't see him unseating the President, the GOP might turn to its left, Alf Landon is too green in '32, La Follette Jr is just old enough to run so maybe him

Smith, or any other Democrat, being elected in OTL 1928 conditions is basically ASB.

I agree, Smith more than most given the Catholic issue, but yeah the boom years of the 1920s were seen as Republican victories and every one that wanted "a Chicken in every pot" knew how to vote (if only they knew....)

anyone elected in 1928 would have been sworn in only about 6 months before the Great Crash begins, so it would be to late for them to implement any preventative policy change - even if they had the insight (with the knowledge and economic theory of the time) to see the problem coming.
In order to get the New Deal you probably need the US to go through the suffering of the Depression, before people will believe they need radical new solution to the problem, and the conventional wisdom was wrong.

ASB Al Smith was unelectable in 1928. Given OTL conditions any Democrat would lose to any Republican, but to even think that a wet, Cathoilc, urban candidate could win in 1928 America is insane. The only way the GOP could lose that election is if they nominated Al Smith.

I could see Smith winning possibly if there is another progressive party candidate along the lines of LaFollette who divides the Republican vote.
