WI/AHC: Vlad the Impaler, King of Romania

Is it possible for Vlad the Impaler to unite the Romanian lands and become its King? What will happen if he succeeded?

Or is it ASB?

Vlad the Impaler of Wallachia ruled during the same time as Stefan cel Mare of Moldavia, one of the most militarily competent princes in what is now Romania. So its going to be pretty unlikely.

One way of doing it could be to become a vassal of the Ottomans, and unite his strength with Mehmet the Conqueror's to conquer Moldavia, thus becoming the sole Romanian king under Turkish vassalage. Then he could rebel and become independent, his historical record showing that Vlad certainly possessed the skills to fend off the Turks.

Problem with that is the Turks would see it coming and station alot more troops and get alot more hostages and the like out of him before even considering to support him...plus he loses alot of face and his allies if he does so....

Dont forget Vlads religious fantascism and the fact the Turks were supporting his brother Radu

I suppose it would be in Vlad's character to just not care about his hostages... and I would think that from Mehmet's point of view, Vlad was just this petty Balkan prince who was blocking the way to the real prize (Hungary and Serbia to a lesser extent), so he probably wouldn't pay excess attention.

If Vlad was vassalized the Turks would probably drop their support for Radu. The religious fanaticism is probably a deal-breaker, but that's the price you pay for union I guess.

The Hungary problem is indeed an issue. I guess one could have Vlad flip Romania back into the Hungarian sphere once the task of union was finished. Would fit in nicely with the fickle nature of Balkan politics, even if historical Vlad probably didn't have the acumen to do something like that.
