WI/AHC: Russia as weak possible post USSR break up

How do you make Russis weak as possible (No WW3, or a all out civil war) after the fall of the Soviet Union? And what effects would this have on the world?

Someone shoots Putin when he takes office, and Russia never "recovers" from the nineties. Or make the War in Chechnya as bad as possible, chemical weapons, rampant terrorism, dirty bombs, etc. My two cents.

Have Tatarstan and many of the internal Russian Republics lead partisan revolts in the early 90s, have even worse inflation and economic downturn, Putin gets killed early in his administration or never gets into public office...

OTL comes pretty close. Russia is a wreck.

Eh, it could be worse than that.

But I share the sentiments with the others, to make Russia weak as possible, reduce aid to Russia, kill Putin before or during the early years of office. Support separatism from Russia (Chechnya, Prussia, Tartarstan/Idel-Ural et.al.)

A lot of things can be done to ensure Russia is the weakest of the Great Powers.

More balkanization as it falls, so you have portions of SSRs breaking off -- perhaps Siberia, etc.

Worldwide oil prices fall as the USSR is collapsing, giving Russia far less money and less oil influence so Ukraine, etc are less inclined to defer to them.

Civil war in 1992 that pretty much wrecks Russia and causes the USSR to break up to avoid participating. NATO moves into the breakaways to help prevent the spread of the disorder and the resulting war leaves Russia a basket case a few shades better than in 1945.
