An idea I've always found somewhat interesting is the idea that sometime in the past, the Republican Party had split between it's moderate and liberal factions and it's conservative faction into two parties. Not only do I want to discuss circumstances, but the long haul - how does it affect the Republican Party? How long does the split last? etc.
I'm aware this is extremely implausible and don't think a true party split is really possible in American politics anymore, but let's have some fun with the idea.
