WI/AHC: Post Civil War Mass Migration of African Americans Out of the South

As the tin says, the WI/AHC is for African Americans to move out of the Southern United States en masse and settle somewhere else in the US.

How do we go about doing this? Does it require some sort of compensation by the government? Plenty of other groups of people left Europe in poverty and found success in the US so I don’t know that it necessarily does.

But, where would a population of between 4-5 million African Americans settle within the US in the late 1860s and early 1870s?

What is the impact on the African american community? The state/region they settle? The South they left behind? United States as a whole?

Class war in the South between the aristocracy and the even more impoverished lower classes. It wouldn't end well...

Southern trees bear strange fruit
Blood on the leaves and blood at the root
Planter bodies swinging in the southern breeze
Strange fruit hanging from the poplar trees

Pastoral scene of the gallant south
The bulging eyes and the twisted mouth
Scent of magnolias, sweet and fresh
Then the sudden smell of burning flesh

Here is fruit for the crows to pluck
For the rain to gather, for the wind to suck
For the sun to rot, for the trees to drop
Here is a strange and bitter crop

They go to Sewards Icebox, with good riddance by racists.Trouble really breaks out later when whites realize Alaska isn't a frozen dumping ground and that freed slaves are prospering while the South is bereft of their labor. With the blacks gone, poor whites turn frustrations onto the remaining mansion set and the South eventually gets a kkk type of Red Terror directed against authority.

It depends on the definition of mass migration, but there was already quite a bit of migration of blacks from south to north. A way to get more emigration could be to have a native group that was hard to conquer, and encourage blacks to settle there so as to increase American presence. Combined with the US annexing more of Mexico and the Oregon territory, you could get quite a bit of black migration.

Also, the US somehow getting Australia and New Zealand could make the US have more land than they could settle, giving blacks more land they could independently farm.

The original plan, where it was expected they'd be cheap colonizers of the west. With enough wisdom, they spread them real wide. Cue afroamericans being completely assimilated in every way, including racially

It’s not an ideal situation but what about states like the Dakotas, Montana, Idaho and Wyoming?
In the 1870's and 1880's OTL, large numbers of German immigrants settled large parts of the Midwest: Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, Iowa, Wisconsin, Illinois, etc. These states obviously had room for settlers and are not as cold, dry and mountainous as the northern tier and Wyoming. You could end up with towns and counties dominated by ex-slaves.

... which would create quite a bit of racial tension between the ethnically European settlers and Afro-slave decendents. The struggle for land and jobs and such. Though, I suppose that might just help with assimilation culturally, since both sides would be seeking to get the favor of the WASP/Yankee elite and so will try to cast the other as more "forgien" than themselves. This could lead to quicker abandonment of, say, German and Polish in favor of English.
