WI/AHC: New York City + Long Island in New Jersey?

This is a scenario that's interested me for some time. What if, at some point in it's history, New York, and the rest of Long Island outside Brooklyn & Queens, had become part of New Jersey?

There's really just one condition: the POD is 1787, the year of the Constitutional Convention.
You may use things such as the secession of New England(think: VulcanTrekkie's 'verse, A Looser Union, or even DoD), or state breakups(like what was tried with State of Jefferson proponents IOTL), as a couple of examples.
Bonus points are awarded if New Jersey is split in half, and/or if New York state is carved up at some point(speaking of the latter: there was a scenario done by a guy going by the handle of Skelentov on DA, that was pretty good.).

??? New York City become part of New Jersey? ???

I could see New Jersey being absorbed by New York, and then the Upstate area splitting off, leaving New York City and OTL's New Jersey in a single polity. Not that it's very likely, but I could see it. But that polity would be called New York, not New Jersey.

What I can't see is that polity being called New Jersey. Really, I can't. Why would it be?
