So what if (and how can this come about) the Mongols were able to conquer the Byzantine crusader states, the empire of Nicea and Constantinople and establish a khanate based in former Byzantine territory?

Bonus points for no puns

What would stop this from just being part of the Golden Horde?

Or Ilkhanate, I suppose.

Perhaps the horde's eventual deterioration creating something similar to the Crimean Kahnate? The problem then becomes how do we prevent the horde from being absorbed into the local population and or being run out by mobs of Greeks and Crusaders. For that, I don't have the answer. The bulk of the horde's manpower came from the far east, but they held out alright in Russia thanks to the local population's sparseness. The only way I can see this lasting as an independant polity would be if an intelligent ruler realized that his new domain couldn't survive with a tiny elite ruling class that is despised by the rest of the populace and made a huge attempt to integrate Greek and Mongol culture. It would still mean giving up much of their cultural uniqueness though, and I can see little reason why the ruler would want the be a Kahn instead of a Basileus, given the latter's significance to both western Christians and Muslims alike.

The former Byzantine Empire also included various Slavic subjects too, right? Not only that, you also have the Second Bulgarian Empire and the Kingdom of Serbia as potential rivals to the Mongols if they want to conquer the Balkans. Subjugating Bulgaria is a must for the Golden Horde if they are to conquer Constantinople, but like all other invaders that tried and failed to capture the city, they need ships. One does not simply conquer Constantinople without warships, and one cannot simply have a navy to back it up.

A Khanate of the Purple Horde, if you will. :p

I can't really see them coming via Anatolia since there's Straits in the way, but I guess it's possible for Bulgaria to get subsumed and then for Constantinople to be in the crosshairs. That being said, though, I doubt the Mongols could keep a hold of the City for long.

Agreed. I was thinking an invasion through the Balkans ending with Constantinople.

Would it be possible for them to create fleet similar to the situation in Korea?

That was my first thought, balkanizing the horde. As for assimilation, I suppose that's more or less inevitable and we will see a situation similar to Yuan Dynasty. Greek and Mongol mix would be very interesting to see.

At least it wasn't a Khanstantinople joke:D

And yeah, it'll be hard to hold the city but isn't their a way to do so?

Wasn't their a timeline by B444 on the premise of Temujin being enslaved and ending up in the Byzantine Empire?

Yes, its really good but this is the Mongols conquering the city and turning it into another Khanate, whether that becomes the new Byzantine dynasty or a Greek-Mongol mix.

So what would happen after if the Golden Horde or the Ilkhanate managed to take over the Byzantine empire (including Anatolia, Greece, and the other Slavic parts of the empire, ignore how, for the sake of this discussion, lets assume they did it through some magnificent bastarding and some Xanathos gambits). Afterwords they decide to make Constantinople their capital and employ many of the scholars and usage of Greek fire

How does this change history?
