WI/AHC: Gyrocopter-The American Dream

So, in OTL the autogyro/Gyrocopter was initially seen as being an affordable flying vehicle for everyone... But the Depression and WWII destroyed that. What if the dream of a flying vehicle in every household surpassed that of car ownership in America? How would that become a quintessential part of the American Dream instead of car ownership? How would this effect city development and growth?

The dream of everyone flying in a fantasy world is marvelous. The reality is quite different. The depression and WWII killed nothing. Gyrocopters are still available alongside kitplanes and ultra-lights, all relatively affordable. Add to that rocket/jet packs, and you could still invest in the Skycar today, although the litigations might cause you to pause. Traffic jams are bad enough, but traffic jams with the extra dimension of the vertical are exponentially far more horrific.

Worse roads would force more citizens to fly, starting with travelling salesmen and executives.
But I still believe that STOL, fixed-wing airplane's would still capture a large chunk of the market.

When I drive my car, I have to deal with other drivers cutting me off, tail gating, people zig zaging between lanes, drunks, motorcycles riding between lanes, and so on. When there is a wreck, sometimes other cars become involved when they can not stop in time. Could you imagine two gyrocopters colliding and spinning down hitting other gyrocopters who were flying at lower levels?
I suspect that there would be greater regulations of these machines.

There are regulations for these machines, such as air traffic control zones and IFR/VFR flight regulations that limit where and when and under what conditions you can fly. In the dream scenario, it's never night or bad weather.

Right. And if 'copters' became as common as OTL cars, people would abide by those rules how well? Since, for instance, no one ever drives drunk on a highway or speeds, iOTL, right?
