WI/AHC - Germany, Italy and France become constitutional monarchies

What-If Germany, Italy, France and possibly even Austria became/remained constitutional monarchies and what would the consequences be?

Additionally with the exception of France* (whose likely POD is pre-1900 via Prince Philippe of Orleans becoming Philippe VII upon the passing of Henri – Count of Chambord in 1870) and Italy (the latter likely entailing a surviving Franco-like US-backed Mussolini that was neutral/allied in WW2), what PODs would be needed in the case of Germany and Austria?

Germany was quiet much constitutional monarchy. Chachellor and reichtag had much of power over kaiser.

Perhaps if you could get CPs win WW1. Germany and Italy already were constitutional monarchies. And Austria would gravitate even more towards such. Action Francaise would take power in France and it becomes monarchy and in some point it becomes more democratic monarchy.

The French Monarchy ended for the final time due to the humiliating defeat they suffered at the hands of the Prussians, sparking an anti-Monarchist uprising that settled the peace and retained power thereafter. I don't believe Napoleon III was all that unpopular prior to this.

As such either avoiding the Franco-Prussian War, having France do far better in it (even if it ends in German Unification), or having the loss of the war not popularly blamed on the Emperor or the Crown, might see the French Monarchy persist.

Similarly the German Monarchy fell in the aftermath of the First World War: the German Revolution ended with Germany proclaimed a Republic after the Kaiser lost all support both on the home front and among the military. As such there might be two ways Germany became a Monarchy again: first, it never stops being one, with WW1 settled with a peace treaty that came to be before the total collapse of the German nation; or second, if Hitler sought restoration as a propaganda means, which might be possible if he either didn't regard the Kaiser as partly responsible for Germany's defeat or if he confined his blame to Wilhelm II himself rather than the entire office. Perhaps Hitler restores the Monarchy (with far more limited powers, if any at all) as part of his efforts to win over the business and military officer groups, both of which had elements of Monarchist support, but which in our history were won over with anti-communist appeals.

In Italy the referendum was in fact only a narrow victory for the Republic anyway, you probably wouldn't need huge changes to swing it by a couple of percentage points.

For germany its pretty easy, have willies dad live (much) longer and survive the planned coup of the proto-himmler. germany moved strongly in the direction of constitutionalism even with a kaiser fighting tooth and nails against it,one in support of it would seal the deal.

Despite attempts to get the Italian referendum out as soon as possible, delays pile up until 1947 or 1948. Returnee soldiers were monarchists, by and large, and the vote waiting for them could be enough to swing the results in the other direction.

A big problem is that most of the likely heirs to the various thrones at this point are not exactly very likeable or competent human beings. People deciding to vote to abolish the monarchy as soon as possible seems like a likely scenario.

Of course if we depart from the original timeline they wouldn't be the same people anyway.

A victory or at least not a defeat in WWI would be a good enough reason to keep the monarchy going in Germany for a bit.

Karl I being able to achieve his desperate quest for peace during WWI and maybe end the war earlier might be enough to let him keep ruling Austria.

I don't see the French accepting any Kings or emperors unless the elected rulers screw up big time somehow.

Restoration is somehow possible if France loses WW1. Then some monarchist movement might manage get power.

Umberto II was probably the best of the later Savoys (better than his father or son). So, he WOULD be an improvement.

France's last chance for a monarchist restoration was in 1871. By the 20th Century with the likes of Clemenceau in power that was never going to happen and, later, De Gaulle was a committed Republican.

For Italy you just need them to avoid WWII (stay neutral) and Germany you just need them not to get in WWI. Both monarchies survive. The current Presidents of Italy and Germany are largely ceremonial and the King//Emperor could fill the same role. For Italy you would need for VEIII to both distance himself from Mussolini quickly or abdicate at least by 1943 in favor of Umberto. The referendum on the monarchy was largely a referendum on the actions of VEIII.

A more stable German monarchy could possibly be a restoration of the "Empire" with Rupert of Bavaria instead of the Prussians. He was still respected in Bavaria and other parts of Germany and perhaps if the communist inspired uprisings and attempts to take power after WWI go even worse ... or instead of Hitler, a section of the Weimar Republican populace (including Hindenburg) look to a restoration of the monarchy instead to stabilize the country. Remember, there were a lot of "kings" in Germany, just because the Hohenzollerns were disgraced doesn't mean there aren't other options.

Another related scenario to consider, what if a surviving post-WW1 German constitutional monarchy not only ended up absorbing Austria down the road (as a sort of ATL Anschluss analogue), but later also featured situations where female members of the former Austria Habsburg-Lorraine marry into the German Hohenzollerns to produce heirs that potentially take the throne?

Which German Princes are paired up with former Austrian Archduchesses in such a scenario?
