WI/AHC: British Republic..on the 1800's

It is REALLY, REALLY hard to imagine. The monarchy is not is an institution the majority of Victorians would want to abolish, and that's true even in modern Britain.

Best way to make the U.K. a republic in the 1800's is to have Ernest Augustus on the throne in 1832 & stop the Great Reform Act. If that happens, sooner or later the Chartists are going to rebel. Hell, just having Ernest on the throne is going to do serious damage to the Monarchy.

Better still (to get a overthrow) would be the Ernest Augustus take the throne by murdering Victoria (as was rumoured that he was planning) that get out its likely that it could forces a republic uprising.

of course the just as likely would be some type of new monarchy(perhaps some form of noble lead uprising to protect their place the moderates at lest ) either under another child of George III(perhaps the Duke of Cambridge) or one of the dukes descended from Charles II bastards.

To be honest, i just learned everything about Ernst Augustus here, so..

How unpopular he is? What is his policies OTL?

Ernst Augustus, from what I've gathered, was an immensely unpopular man, and would have likely trampled all over the British parliament and state, and generally just been a gigantic reactionary cyst on society.

I could see them pulling a 1688 on his ass, and inviting another claimant to sit upon the throne.

How popular he is with the public?

And-how bad he is, actually?

Like-that bad even can spark a republican revolution?

Guess this could do "temporary" Republic in 19th century. Have Ernst Augustus personally murder Victoria would damage the institution and incite popular revolt, but this is the cliched classic setting to set up later "RETURN OF THE KING" scenario...

In this case, won't be surprised if post alt Crimean/whatever war Britain will end up pulling a Gondor and turn into an even stronger Monarchy
