I honestly don't know if there were African-American hippies to the extent that there were white hippies-it seems to have been a movement dominated largely by middle and upper middle class white kids, despite some elements of the hippie culture being adopted by Jimi Hendrix and others. But what if MLK's nonviolent teachings had been taken to heart by the African-American community (no Malcom X or Black Power, perhaps) and there had been an inner city hippie movement that had grown out of King's original philosophy? Could some of the race riots (like Detroit, for example) have been avoided? What would a black hippie movement have been like?
