WI: Abraham Lincoln II Lives

I know this is a small butterfly but what would have happened if Abraham Lincoln's grandson didn't die from Blood Poisoning after a surgery to remove a Carbuncle.

The Lincoln family claims that he resembled Abe Lincoln in appearance and had a similar character could he have been elected President or held any important political position and what butterflies will happen as a result of him living?

He was born in 1873, so 1920 would probably have been the earliest year he would have run for President. He would have been a Republican. Possibly he would have supported TR and the Progressive Party in 1912.

If he had won the Republican nomination in 1920 instead of Harding and then been elected President and re-elected in 1924, Hoover could still have been nominated and elected in 1928 with the same results in American history as in OTL.

Other possibilities:

He is elected as Vice President to Harding in 1920, becomes President when Harding dies in August 1923, is elected President in 1924 and re-elected in 1928.

He wins the Republican nomination in 1940 or 1944 and although he loses to FDR does better than Wilkie or Dewey did in OTL.

How about the effects in Illinois of having a powerful Republican political dynasty, perhaps the Lincolns become the downstate counter-balance to the Chicago Machine?

Ya they would be huge, i think the Lincoln's would be Illinois royalty so as a result they will become an similar to the Kennedy family in Mass.

Do you feel that Abe Lincoln II would be a TR Republican or a Business Republican or a mixture of both

I think Abe Lincoln II might be a TR Republican considering his grandfather was also a reformer.

With the kind of name recognition that he would have he would be able to take more reformist stands against the power that be. If he is a reformist, then under the aegis of Lincoln's Republican Party Chicago might actually develop a middle-class reformist faction, similar to NYC, that is able to challenge the power of the machine in that city.

A real opposition party in Chicago would shift Illinois and in turn national politics. Richard Daley was one of the more influential political figures in post-WWII America. I know ripples would happen, but think of OTL 1960 without Daley in Chicago. Nixon becomes President. There would be other, sooner, ripples, but that came immediately to mind.

Two questions come to mind, assuming that Lincoln II has a political career.

1. If he is prominent in Illinois-is he Governor, a congressman or a Senator?

2. Just as John Quincy Adams and George Walker Bush, used their middle name to distinguish themselves from their Presidential father's, can we expect a similar effort from Abraham Lincoln II? If so, how is he refered to? AJ. Lincoln. Abraham John Lincoln? John Lincoln?

Jack Lincoln.

If Abe Lincoln II lived wouldn't there have to be another Booth? :D

Ya I feel like he will most likely change Chicago might grow more rapidly than in otl because of better leadership.... Also TR might win Republican Nomination in 1912 if a Lincoln comes out to support him or he might create a compromise where TR nominee but Taft made VP or Chife Justice of Supreum court... Lol Lincoln could have been a Spanish American war vet and thus been pro war preparedness so early US entry in WWI with TR leading

Actually John Wilkes Booth's brother saved Abe Lincoln II's father's life. During the Civil War Booth's brother pulled a young man back from falling in front of a train. The young man was the son of the President, and the father of the subject of our POD.

Jack Lincoln could be the leading young voice in the GOP at the turn of the 19th century. With a political lineage to kill for, his grandfather martyred, his father a prominent and powerful corporate lawyer and GOP insider (Pullman Company lawyer, cabinet secretary, minister to GB), he would be in a position to easily come into a political career. Throw in a stint in the Army during the Spanish-American War, and I think that you have an Illinois Governor or Senator, with clear and entirely possible Presidential ambitions.

Well from what i could find out about Jack Lincoln is that he was taught in Versailles and was destined to go to Harvard Law School but Jack was Anti-French yet Pro-Britain which could make WWI very interesting

I was toying with the idea of making a TL out of this.. any suggestions???

Go TL-191 (Abe Lincoln founding the Socialist Party) and have Jack Lincoln, after being so well educated, revolt and take the populist side in the great social upheavals of the late 19th-early 20th century. He has it out with his father during the Pullman Strike in 1894, and defends Eugene Debs and his co-defendants in the resulting charges. Debs is convicted, but Lincoln is converted . . .

Don't want to do TL-191 but its a possibility none the less lol :D

i'm tempted to make Jack Lincoln, War Hero of both Spanish-American War and WWI

Jack Lincoln, War Hero, gets the GOP's nod in 1920?

I really don't see how he would significantly affect American politics. Perhaps we have a political dynasty that is over a century old, but unless his own children become involved in politics than it won't matter- he'll be an interesting but unimportant footnote.

Now if Jack Lincoln gets involved in organized labor, he could be the "Lincoln of Labor" (that's what Eugene Debs called Bill Haywood of the IWW) using his family name and clout from whatever elected position he's in to keep the Socialist Party and IWW together. Jack Lincoln, protege of Eugene Debs.

If Lincoln can maintain the peace between the Socialists and the IWW, then when the industrial labor movement comes in from the cold during FDR's term, Lincoln could rise to prominence. How fun would the HUAC hearings be?

HUAC Committe Member: "Mr. Lincoln, are you now or have you ever been a member of the Communist Party?"
