Many of the criticisms leveled at German execution of the war has to do with Nazi exuberance taking the place of common sense. From a moral perspective, clearly Nazism and fascism in Germany were evil. However, this is purely from a detached economic standpoint. The Holocaust economically made no sense. It was a burden to the economy and resources. The loss of Jewish business was economically dense, and the loss of these so labelled "undesirable" elements as a component of the German war effort was idiotic. Jewish soldiers would have fought in the field, as they had in the First World War. Jewish scientists could have gotten Germany the atomic bomb, and other technological achievements better, faster, more efficiently. Instead, they fled to the Allied nations, causing a brain drain, and Germany bungled in the dark because it feared "Jewish science". In the invaded East, there were millions who hated the Russians or the Communists, showed their ability to successfully establish free market economies if given the chance, and would have supported and joined a government whose goal it was to free them from Marxism and get rid of the Soviet Union. Instead, the Nazis persecuted the East and rounded them up for the slaughter. Had Germany pursued a policy in the East similar to the West, it could have drawn major support for the War effort as it had in places such as France. Instead, it shot itself in the foot.

The lingering issue is the paradox of it. A German War is undermined by Nazism, while at the same time a German War may only exist because of Nazism. It is also important to note that fascism is bad, and regardless of it's state, it is good that it lost and Nazism lost. I'll wave the flag for Liberal Democracy.

What if, rather than Nazism, Germany had become simply a fascist state?
