WI: A US without Theodore Roosevelt?

As the title says, what would the United States be without Roosevelt? More specifically, what would have been the ramification if in 1901 before Roosevelt was sworn in, he was shot and killed by a lone gunmen. Theodore Roosevelt domestic and international policy is still a legacy felt today.

What would the US be like without him?

Two Presidents dying in the space of a week? Grist for giant conspricy mills.

A big chunk of that legacy was set before he became President. His time as Sec Nav & other political offices, & his influence as a political activist up until the Presidents death. While he wont be much remembered his influence will linger on for decades in the US Navy & in more subtle ways in the Republican party.

The assassination of the Vice President immediately after the assassination of the President would, at any time in US history, produce enormous shocks and convulsions. It hardly matters when.

If however one wishes to focus on the effects of "no TR", just have him KIA in Cuba. Someone else will be elected governor of New York that year, and someone else will be elected Vice President in 1900. If Czolgosz still assassinates McKinley, that man becomes President. He might do some of the things TR did, but it's unlikely he will be the same sort of aggressive figure.

What else? There will probably still be a Progressive movement, but not a Presidential campaign.

No need for him to be shot. I read that when he heard the news of the assassination he rode down a mountain upon a horse, in the rain, at night. Though I might be misremembered some of the details. The main point was a comment by him or another of the danger of him riding off the road or being thrown from his horse. Hell, having him tripping and laying outside at night in the rain would be bad enough. And yah, considering Czolgosz had no support before the assassination by anarchists (part of their evidence about not being involved with him was a notice they shared around warning about him being an agent provactier or police informer due to him asking around for how to get bombs and guns) having Roosevelt be assassinated... Well, I imagine it would need to be another loner, as the anarchists wouldn't try something like that, especially when facing mobs blaming them for McKinley.

Need a fourth head for Mt Rushmoore or go it with three and place a TBD banner where TR is. Would be filled by FDR after his passing.

Originally it was going to be Washington, Lincoln, and Jefferson. If they didn't have Roosevelt they might put in Jackson or just have the heads closer together. Hell, TR is just kind of jammed in their, even in the design they were using until they ran out of money for the rest of the bodies.

Roosevelt was the exact person the party bosses and C/conservative establishment did not want to be president, which is why he was expected to have his career die in the vice presidency. Without Roosevelt, at a critical juncture, you will not see Progressivism as a lion-like force in government. And progressivism was a release valve for a lot of growing tension between labor, common people and business and the ruling class. Without that moderate reform by contrast, you could see radical forces such as Socialism emboldened as the issues of the era continue and grow even worse. Do not take this lightly, because this is an era when business owners literally had Pinkertons machine gun their workers to death with impunity, and workers formed armed militias in return. The term "redneck" comes from that. So this is a grave issue. It is a hell of a lot more serious and far reaching than Mount Rushmore and the National Park System.
