The inter-war period saw the rise of nationalist movements across the Arab region, motivated by a variety of Pan-Arabist, Islamist and regional ideologies. The imperial powers of Britain and France, however, retained their grip over the mandates. Is it possible that the nationalist goal of full independence could be achieved somewhere in the Arab region? For example, could the Great Syrian Revolt of 1925-1927 succeed under different circumstances, and could we see a much bloodier conflict between Palestinian Arabs and the Zionists?

Here's a more unlikely possibility: could we see a Pan-Arabist state emerge?
