WI a shattered Britain in 1640-1650

I was reading about the English civil wars yesterday and i wondered what it would take for Ireland to break away and Scotland to break the personal union with England and all 3 of them (England, Scotland, Ireland) to continue as separate states with different monarchs (or Lord Protector if England remains a republic)...
And in Ireland's case who would be King?

Would Ireland even have a king?

I was under the impression that Ireland was a fairly de-centrilized country without a single goverment before the English invaded

Ireland did have a King, it was nominally up until the Act of Union of 1800 ruled as a separate Kingdom under the King of England/Great Britain.

As for how to make it so that the personal union between England, Scotland and Ireland to continue as separate stats, that would be difficult as it would require a more Parliamentary noble to take the throne of England (or alternately, become a republic) and it would also require enough of a weakening on the side of the Royalists and Parliamentarians to actually be able to create an independent Irish state. Of course the English Civil War is not my strong suit so I don't really know how to explain it.

Ηow about England turning into a Republic under Cromwell or some other guy while Charles I or his son seek refuge in Scotland and continue his reign there? As for Ireland with all this mess they would declare independence from the English...
Its not my field anyway but i thought to give it a shot...

This is something I was wondering about a few days ago. During the Civil War the Irish were allied with the Royalists and were self-governed during a period often called the Irish Catholic Confederation which lasted from the Rebellion of 1641 until the Cromwellian Invasion of 1649.

Now the only parts of Ireland that were under English control were Dublin and Derry. The English under Cromwell reinvaded Ireland using Dublin as a port and base. Before Cromwell could attack a force under James Butler, Earl of Ormonde moved to attack the town and even though it outnumbered the english defenders by more then two to one it suffered a crushing defeat.

Now maybe having the Irish Confederate forces may not have completely defeat the English and prvent any sort of invasion but it would certainly have made thing more difficult for the English and could have brought more people to Ireland to fight for the Confederate and Royalist causes.

Have Charles I win in England and you'd probably end up losing Ireland, badly. Scotland he may lose because winning a Civil War early in Britain may make the fool think he can push the Scotch again, when there's another Bishops War he'd utterly fail, fall flat on his face and possibly lose Scotland (maybe one of his sons/grandsons will declare themselves King of Scotland).
