WI a friendly Ottoman Sultan to Byzantine Emperor?

In 1421 Murad II succeded as Sultan of the Ottomans... Few months later Byzantine Emperor Manuel II released from prison the pretender Mustafa Celembi and recognised him as true heir of Bayezid I... With the help of Byzantine army and navy Mustafa landed on the european dominions of Murad and beat Murad's armies easily... With the help of Byzantine gold Mustafa confronted and defeated a large army under Beyazid Pasha and declared himself Sultan in Adrianople... Sultan Mustafa crossed Dardanelles to Asia with a large army but Murad bribed some of his units to desert him (while others deserted him because of his cruelty and violence)... Mustafa was defeated and sought refuge in Gallipoli... Murad II with the help of Genoese army besieged him captured him and killed him... Mustafa vowed to punish the Byzantine Emperor for this...
WI Mustafa had won and deposed Murad II? He would be greatly indebted to the Byzantine Emperor and this would have delayed significantly the Fall of Constantinople... Any thoughts?

My mistake... Murad II vowed to punish the Emperor... not Mustafa...
Anyway... i believe that with Mustafa and his succesors as Sultans Byzantium would be safe for 100 years at least...

It might give the empire a short reprieve but I very much doubt it would be that long. Even if Mustafa showed gratitude there is no reason his successor would. Given its history and its strategic position the city will be too tempting a target to the Ottomans.

Byzantines

I agree with Steve. In my opinion, the Byzantine empire ceased to be an empire when Asia Minor was lost. Constantinople was a nuisance to the Turks once they began to expand into eastern Europe. Truces and peace with the Byzantines could only be temporary at best.

I tried a similiar timeline once, but was corrected by Abdul Hadi Pasha who helped me make some corrections on it. Basically the siege of Constantinople happens to fail, the Sultan is humiliated and flees back to Adrianople where he is challenged by one of his brothers, Civil War ensues in which the Ottoman Empire is torn in two. The Byzantines are able to retake some territory back and over the course of the next few decades are able to take most of Thrace.

I think Mustafa wouldnt attack Byzantium... His succesors however could... But out of gratitude they would have imposed only tribute on the Emperor not sack the city...
