This weird thought came to me last night.Bare with me for a moment...

Has anyone ever read the Amtrak Wars? Its a post-apocolyptic sci-fi series. The general plot of the books isn't important here but there is one occasion where the lead character meets the president of a big underground nation (The Amtrak Federation) and they have a little discussion.
This president speaks of (amongst other things) his love for trains. He says that back in the days of trains the world was great, it was organised, every town had its station which was its focal point, the trains ran on schedule linking up the country in a set pre-determined pattern. Then along came motor cars, everyone could drive around wherever they wanted. Society changed.
He obviously thought the car was a bad thing. I disagree but nonetheless I can kind of see a point in what he is saying. Trains are cool. It is pretty nifty how everything can be linked up in a set pattern along set routes.

So....
WI a world leader gets much the same idea?
What if a country decides roads are a waste of time. That trains are the true way. Public transport. The transport of the public. Cars meanwhile are the tools of the bourgois devil. Why do we need a motorway system?
At all plausible that a country could attempt such a thing?

It would of course make for a country with a less effcient transport system than one which has motorways yet nonetheless....its quite the interesting thought.
