During the Sengoku, or Warring States, Period of Japanese history, various daimyo converted to Catholicism in exchange for European weaponry and trade connections. What if one of them, say Konishi Yukinaga, managed through some twist of fate become shogun and unify Japan? How would this effect subsequent Japanese history? Would the Japanese branch of Christianity eventually break off from the Catholic Church in favor of its own localized version (a la Anglicanism)? Would the Japanese Emperor still be regarded as such due to his reliance on the Shinto faith for legitimacy?
