WI: A Briefly British Mexico?

Spain and the United Kingdom were frequently at war with one another in the eighteenth century.

I'm looking for a scenario during this period in which Britain receives all (or a huge portion) of Mexico as spoils of war (with the assistance of anti-Spanish Mexicans) during one of these periods of time and begins using it as an early penal colony (Irish indentured servitude mostly) until *The Mexican War of Independence sometime between the 1770's and the 1820's. Thus, "briefly" British Mexico.

What are the effects in North America (specifically Mexico) and in Europe?

What changes are made in Mexico itself before *The Mexican War of Independence? English integrated gradually into the Mexican form of Spanish? Catholicism losing power in the regional governments? American support during the *Mexican War for Independence?

NOTE: The ideal scenario is for a longer lived Nappy to lead the battle for Mexican Independence from Britain in exchange for the throne of the new Mexican Empire. ;)

Why would he do this? Being Emperor of France is 100x the better option, and if he's already been chased out of France then I dare say he has no chance.

There have been a lot of discussions on Napoleon escaping exile and accepting the throne of the Mexican Empire. If that Empire is born out of a successful revolution against Britain it makes this scenario that much more of a kick in the teeth to the UK which Nappy would of course adore.

That's not really the point, though. The point is: WI: A Briefly British Mexico?

Effects, etc.

I think your best bet is for the British to take Veracruz during a longer Seven Years' War, but it's not easy. After the American Revolution, I don't think they can project power so close to the Americans.
