WI: A Bourbon/Habsburg Qing Empress

It could be possible so long as they would flee to Spain or Austria or France(Depending on the time frame), which would be entirely likely so long as they feared that they would be dragged before the Throne. But the more likely place to go would be Japan as it was right there and with the Sino-Japanese rivalry, Japan would most likely keep the claimant as a middle finger to the Qing, but that would not allow the claimant to leave Japan. This really all depends on the time frame of which the emperor is exiled if you would give that then this thread could be much more descriptive.

I am thinking is it possible for one of the Qing Emperors to marry a Bourbon or Habsburg from Spain.

Possible in theory, if the Qing was powerful enough to project power outside China and Central Asia. And I mean really powerful.

But then again... are the Bourbons/Habsburgs willing to marry a princess of to non-Catholic let alone a non-Christian? And are the Qing Ruling class willing to accept?

As I said, it would work in theory. But if Qing China can not benefit France/Spain or Austria signifantly the marriage proposal won't even be considered. In reallity it is as possible as Abdulhamid II marrying his daughter to a Devout Christian Nicholas II of Russia. Like, not happening.

On the Qing side, i can’t imagine they would make her an empress as that was reserved for Manchu women, it’d probably be something like noble consort or imperial concubine. On the european side I think you’d need a Europe that’s much more dependent on Qing goodwill whether that’s because the Qing are straight up sailing to France or because of some sort of diplomatic isolation in Europe blocking their commercial interests in the New World, Christendom and the Islamic world, so they convince the Chinese to let their merchants in in exchange for becoming tributary states, surrendering up a princess and accepting the Qing emperors status as son of heaven. Idk it’s a long shot but this i think is hard to do sans asb help.

I would go with an exile. The emperors have harems of women that produce extra princes - some of these princes either (have unfortunate accidents), take up a day job, or wonder when the emperor is going to select his heir. It would be easy to have the 18th Prince, who will never get anywhere other than some second rate bureaucrat to go to Europe.

I would use the Arcadio Huang* model, but far more successful - where he marries one of Louis' bastards (he had a few running around that he wanted to get rid of)

* -IRL Arcadio Huang - a Chinese Christian visited Europe. He became the Librarian for Louis the Sun King, a favorite of Paris Salons, he married a French woman, and was the co-author of the first French-Chinese Dictionary

Chinese emperors did not marry foreigners as equals in the way European monarchs did.
Unless you are a Mongol.Numerous Qing Empresses were Mongols.
