WI: 9/11 but in another country.

en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/2007_South_Korean_hostage_crisis_in_Afghanistan

Koreans have a bad reputation in middle east for sending too much christian missionaries there..

That's true, and I remember the controversy in Korea about the government allegedly paying ransom to get the missionaries out, even though the same government had warned them numerous times against going to Afghanistan.

That said, I don't get the impression that resentment against Korean missionaries really translates into murderous hatred of the Korean government. While I do think that the "blowback" hypothesis is somewhat overstated, in order to get Islamist terrorist attacks against your country, it does seem to help to have a significant military presence in Muslim countries, and/or a history of colonizing Muslim countries. Korea does have a slight bit of the former, in Afghanistan, and while it did play some role in motivating the kidnapping of the missionaries, it doesn't really seem to have put Seoul on anyone's radar as the Evil Empire; and of course they have no history of colonizing Muslims.

What about in Israel or Russia? Or both at the same time? There was the whole "Palestine and Chechnya" business pre-9/11 for redical muslims.
Edit: as for the symbolic date, you have V-day for both nations.

Are you sure the US would not just shrug and say how sad but that kind of thing happens abroad?

Even weighting the scales much worse than the World trade centre ( fewer deaths but more important people) I worry the Americans would not support such an attack.

Yeah, I mean 7/7 didn't come off as more than a "meh" within a few years, and we perceived the Spanish reaction to its train bombings as appeasement.

I was thinking more how the IRA has spent 100 years(on and off) bombing bits in Ireland and the mainland including the queen's uncle and the tory party conference without any comment from Washington beyond tut, but you are right.

The IRA received quite a lot of unofficial funding and weaponry from the USA. It wasn't Washington's policy to support the IRA, but they didn't appear to try very hard to shut those channels down.
