Ben Carson would have won.

Lincoln Chafee was not particularly effective when he sought the nomination. I have no idea how he wins the nomination.

Realistically I can the Democratic nomination having gone to Vice President Joseph Biden, Senator Warren, or even Senator Sanders in lieu of Clinton.

But nominating Chafee is a much taller order even if Clinton had not run.

The basic conditions of this election favored the Republicans.

The Democrats had two hopes for overcoming this-Donald Trump was so unpopular that there was a decent possibility that his campaign could have collapsed in disaster.

Unfortunately, the Democrats nominated Hillary Clinton-whose high unfavorables and tinge of scandal and general lack of charisma weakened the anti-Trump effect-which almost pushed her over the top.

Point being Chafee is more like Clinton than like Biden.

The negative Carson effect won't be as large as the Trump effect probably was in some places. The reason why Carson is a terrible choice is not as obvious as with Trump. His personality makes it easy for people not paying attention to not be too aware of how extreme a theocrat he actually is.

So-Carson wins.

Lincoln Chafee began his campaign by talking about the metric system-his main debate strategy was to passively aggressively announce that he there were no scandals associated with him.

When he was asked about his support for now controversial legislation as a Senator his defense essentially was that he had no idea what he was doing.

Nothing about his campaign suggests someone who can win despite the conditions being against his party.

I can only see this happening if, for the democrats: Hillary Clinton is indited for the e-mail thing and is forced to drop out, the Republicans seriously hammer down the "socialist" thing with Bernie Sanders, and Martin O'Malley opts not to run. Chafee manages to beat Webb in the primary because Webb is too moderate.

For the Republicans, Trump drops out early due to low polling numbers. Carson takes over as the anti-establishment vote and also manages to court Evangelicals enough that he wins the nomination.
