As I see it, the Kriegsmarine's Scharnhorst-class battleship/battlecruiser faced a little bit of a Napoleon complex. Why were they only armed with 11-inch guns? Many similar sized ships (and even some smaller vessels) of rival navies had 14/15-inch guns by the 1930s. So why were the guns on the Scharnhorst and Gneisenau only 11 inches in diameter?
