Why no Spain-wank?

I'm back!!!

My feeling about Spain is that they drew a free "make evil empire" card from the deck. Virtually all other truly big empires got that way by tolerance and working with the conquered. That was true of early Persia, Rome and the Ottomans. But they got lucky on the tech imbalance. And so, they COULD work their slaves so badly they put even the Aztecs well in the shade,mortality-wise.

I fully disagree with this argument. Tolerance? Working with the conquered?

The Spanish Empire was not a place in which we, people from the XXI, would have liked to live in, but can you tell me:

When did the french, the english, the portuguese and the dutch write laws to protect their overseas subjects? Spain did it in 1510.

Which empire questioned its existence an its right to rule its newly acquired possessions? Just a clue 1555.

Just consider that something evil to our eyes like the importation of african slaves to american possessions tried to be an humanitarian measure to protect natives.

You may now tell me that those laws were not obeyed, that the adventurers that went to the Americas ignored them... ok, it was hard to make law be obeyed several thousand miles away in the XVI century.
