Why no mediation?

So, why didn't France and/or the UK mediate in the ACW? Was it because they were afraid to get on the US's bad side? Was it just too clear that the war would be a US victory? Or is there another reason?

I'd imagine it would be because as far as the US was concerned there was nothing to mediate, it was an internal issue. To bring foreign mediators in is pretty much recognising the CSA has won and is independant.
 
Indeed. The only way the Europeans could have possibly "mediated" would be after they declared war on the Union and put enough boots on the ground to occupy a few of the major cities. And that may have been beyond their power altogether, and certainly would have cost them a pretty penny at a time they could ill afford it.
