Why do you like alternate history?

I'm curious, what made you guys interested in alternate history? I always liked science fiction and history, so for me, alternate history was kind of putting both of them together. So why do you like this genre?

I like it for pretty much the same reasons. Plus I'm an irony connoisseur, and I get a kick out things like, oh, Al Capone as US President. :)

All those 'What Ifs'...

The butterflies, the fog of war, the designs un-built, the options not taken, the myriad worlds of 'what-if'...

Living in UK, I've seen so much really good stuff stomped by political whim or misjudgement that an interest in AH is almost a given.

I've always loved creative writing, but I have always loved history. For me alternate history combines them perfectly as it gives me a reason and a point to my historical studies/reading, and at the same time allows me to create and change things

Because the possiblities are endless and a better world than OTL can be obtained.

Plus there's the kooky vocab- OTL, ATL, ITTL, POD, ISOT, ME, ....

I was researching a book. When I came across this site it was like driving slowly past a car accident. I just can't stop looking! It's shameful how much time I've spent observing y'all. I feel like Jane Goodall And her chimps.

Is she one of the bare-breasted ones in the news recently ?

I sort of wandered into AH as a result of my interest in wargames, when I realized that half the fun of those games was massively changing history...

Well, I was about twelve years old and a Civil War nut. I read book after book about the Civil War, and they always ended the same way. Then I picked up a book one day called IF THE SOUTH HAD WON THE CIVIL WAR, and whoa! It had a different ending! I've been hooked ever since. ;)

That's almost the same with me. I've liked learning about American Civil War ever since I was seven or eight and your right, the outcome always came out the same way :D . Only difference was that I read "Bring the Jubilee", (a little unrealistic) and I became fascinated with changing history.

I think Grey Wolf was joking. At least I took it that way. ROFL.

Er, no I'm just ignorant. There were these two women on the news yesterday who had had to bare their breasts to please monkeys. Thought maybe she was one of them. Er, I guess not

Now THAT's funny. The British press. Gotta love it. ROFLMAO :D

I have a keen interst in history, esp. military history. That grew into an interst in wargaming, which leads itself very handily to what-ifs. Then I read WorldWar, and I was hooked. I stumbled onto the old boards about... 3 years ago I think. And here I am.

Sodding Nora! Not another of those blatherskite psychologists come here to get material for their book!

Diamond, get Howery started on the shallow grave while I get my shotgun.
