Why divide Germany in '49?

I am asking why was Germany split up at the end of the 40s? I understand that the West had their own currency, but was there more to it?

Also was there any chance of a United Germany being formed in the first place?

Originally there was supposed to be a unified Germany, and the occupation areas under a common Allied Control Council, but the Soviet insistence on implementing Communist policies in their zone lead to the effective unified policy breaking down to the point East and West Germany effectively had different, incompatible systems of management in place, thus resulting in the Soviets formalizing the division by appointing local Communist parties to power without the approval of the other Allies and withdrawing her region from the Control Council's jurisdictionjurisdiction

Some one seemed to make the connection between getting one country split into to factions [north south/east west] , so the dangerous enemy consumes itself fighting its self....instead of threatening others?
